Airlines PNG suspends flights

8:24 am on 19 June 2007

Airlines PNG says it has been forced to suspend flights indefinitely to several airports and airstrips around the country as of next Monday.

Thousands of people, particularly those in rural areas accessible only by air, will be affected.

The National newspaper reports provinces affected include Central and Northern Oro, Milne Bay, Western Highlands, Morobe, Madang, East Sepik, West Sepik's Sandaun, Southern Highlands, Simbu and Bougainville.

The National newspaper reports the move is due to the airline being unable to absorb the cost of cancelled and disrupted flights, and the loss of charter flights.
