Solomons government promoting land reform to improve investment environment

The Solomon Islands government is working on a land reform package in a bid to improve the country's investment environment.

The Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare announced the initiative at the opening of the annual 2007 Taiwan Trade Fair in Honiara yesterday.

He said the land reform package was aimed at addressing the causes of land disputes - one of the major impediments to investment in Solomon Islands.

Mr Sogavare said he agreed with the Taiwanese Ambassador George Chan's statement that land reform was crucial to achieving a sustainable investment programme.

He said the land reform effecting legislation would hopefully be tabled during Parliament's sitting next month.

Mr Sogavare also announced that the government was also working on a number of other reforms aimed at providing a level playing field for investment.
