The Confederation of Public Sector Unions in Fiji has given a 28-day notice to the interim administration to go on a nationwide strike from July the 19th.
The Confederation brings together some of the largest trade unions in the country including the Fiji Public Servants Association, the Fiji Nurses Association, the Fiji Teachers Union and the Air Traffic Management Association of Fiji.
At issue are the unions' grievances about the 5% pay cut imposed by the interim administration and the lowering of the retirement age to 55.
Negotiations on a timeline for the restoration of the pay cuts have been ongoing but the unions have lodged a strike notice to bring pressure to bear on the interim administration.
The chairman of the Confederation of Public Sector Unions, Rajeshwar Singh, says they have little choice but to advance the dispute settling processes and to implement their mandate for industrial action.
