Solomons Police Commissioner wants to re-arm two police sections

6:21 am on 25 June 2007

The Solomon Islands Police Commissioner, Jahir Khan, has put in a supplementary budget to the government of 2.6 million US dollars to purchase weapons for the police force.

Mr Khan is proposing that two sections of the police would be re-armed.

They are the police patrol boats and the Close Protection Unit.

The Commissioner says he would like to buy 40 self loading pistols for the Close Protection Unit.

He says the patrol boat needs to be re-armed as it has the responsibility to protect the country's borders and fishing grounds and could encounter dangerous incidences.

And he also pointed out that as police commissioner he is obliged to carry out government policy.
