Sugar industry groups in Fiji to meet to discuss poor start to crushing season

A meeting of all the groups involved in Fiji's sugar industry is to be held this week after a poor start to the cane crushing season.

The Sugar Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, says the first few weeks of production often run into problems with the machinery.

He adds there have also been difficulties with the supply of cane.

But he says this is not a situation that should continue:

"I am concerned about this, I wouldn't watn to see a repeat of this thing every season, becuase if maintenance is carried out properly we shouldn't see a recurrence of these problems at the beginning of each season and three weeks of bad crushing does reflect badly on the whole seasons performance."
