The company which introduced wireless internet services to Fiji in 2005 is promising to slash international telephone call rates by 80-percent to 90-percent with Voice over Internet Protocol services.
Unwired Fiji's managing director, John Pollock, says this would be a huge reduction and would re-invigorate activities such as call centres and backroom operations for major companies and create employment in large numbers.
Mr Pollock says Unwired Fiji would be the driver for VoIP just as it had been the catalyst for the introduction broadband in Fiji.
But the Fiji Times reports that according to Telecom Fiji, any transmission of voice through the internet in the present regulatory set-up is illegal.
