Regional disaster managers have endorsed a strategy for enhancing early warning systems for Pacific Island countries at a meeting in Majuro in the Marshall Islands.

An official with the Pacific Geoscience Commission Community, Dr Noud Leenders, says the strategy addresses some of the main challenges and issues raised, in relation to early warning systems for Pacific Island countries.

Dr Leenders says a key priority is the need to strengthen communication systems.

"Right from monitoring and detection of for instance an earthquake, right down to warning on the ground for a tsunami in an outer island, where commnuication maybe very difficult, and so there is different levels of need."
