Fuel prices in Fiji at record levels

10:51 am on 3 July 2007

Fuel prices in Fiji have risen to an all-time high from today triggering an outcry from consumers and transport operators.

The price of unleaded petrol has gone up to 1-dollar-21 US cents a litre, diesel fuel to 1-dollar US a litre and kerosene, which is widely used in cooking, has risen to 78-US cents a litre.

The government's Prices and Incomes Board, which determines the prices based on submissions by oil companies, has attributed the increase to a shortage of refinery capacity and an increased demand for fuel in the United States.

It has also blamed the rise in prices on greater demand from China and India.
