American Samoa registers increase in dengue cases

American Samoa' s Health Department says dengue fever appears to be spreading in the territory with 22 cases identified in the last two weeks.

Since January , there have been 51 cases of the disease confirmed by laboratories.

The Communicable Disease Surveillance nurse at Public Health says they are stepping up awareness programmes on television about dengue fever and village visits are also being planned to promote cleanliness around the home.

A local epidemiologist, Jay Roth, says its important that people try to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
