3:15 pm on 16 July 2007

In a bid to avert strikes, Fiji's Interim Public Service Minister Poseci Bune has been directed by Cabinet to continue talks with union leaders who are members of Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions.

The website fijivillage says Mr Bune is to give details of further dialogue with the union leaders to avert strike action.

The Fiji Nurses Association is planning to go on strike from next Tuesday while the Fijian Teachers Association, Viti National Union of Taukei Workers and Public Employees Union plan action from August the 2nd.

The unions want the 5 percent pay cut restored by next month and the retirement age to remain at 60 years and not being lowered to 55.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has agreed that Mr Bune will have to appoint a new Board Chairman to replace Fani Vosaniveibuli who will be asked to tender in her resignation.

Fani Vosaniveibuli is reported to have given an unsatisfactory explanation of a vehicle purchase.
