Tonga reform plan unlikely to be ready by August deadline

2:33 pm on 17 July 2007

The Chairman of Tonga's newly formed parliamentary Tripartite Committee for Political Reform does not think it is possible for his committee to produce a plan within three weeks.

The committee is to report in August but its head, the Noble Luani, says it won't be ready to replace Tonga's 131 year-old system of government.

However, the Noble Luani told Matangi Tonga Online that despite the task given to the committee is enormous there should be something to be presented to the House by the August the 6th deadline.

He says the nine-member committee will gather information on the need for political reform from the government, the nobles and from the people.

The three people's representatives on the committee are awaiting trial on sedition charges.
