Fiji water supply expected back to normal on Friday

The Fiji Public Works Department says it hopes to have its water supplies in Suva back to normal by Friday.

Most parts of the Fiji capital and heavily populated areas around it have been without a piped water supply again since Monday.

The Divisional Engineer for water for the central eastern division, Samuela Tubui, says the water was supposed to be back on Tuesday but one of the two Waimanu supply pumps gave out on Monday night.

He says they're in the process of purchasing spares to repair the pump, and if all goes to plan, water should be back to normal by Friday.

"So the past problem that we have at the moment, it's really the contribution of these two component, mechanical and electrical and since we don't have spares locally it took us quite some time to put this pump back, because we need two machine parts to fit into the old pump that we have, so that's why it took us that long."

Samuela Tubui says engineers have been trucking water out to the affected areas and he has urged consumers to use the water sparingly.
