A New Zealander, Glenn McNeill, has been sentenced to a maximum of 24 years in prison for the murder of Janelle Patton on Norfolk Island in 2002.

Chief Justice, Mark Weinberg, called the crime callous, senseless and seemingly without reason.

Ms Patton sustained more than 60 injuries including stab wounds, cuts and broken bones during the attack.

The murder was the first to take place on Norfolk island in 150 years.
