Construction firm gets environmental all clear in American Samoa

3:03 pm on 25 July 2007

The American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency says the asphalt plant operations at Tafuna are meeting emission standards.

Faamao Asalele Jr. of the Air Quality Division of the EPA says they carried out an inspection of the plant after receiving complaints and they found the McConnel Dowell plan was in compliance with the emission controls.

Mr Asalele says that having an industrial area right next to a residential area would always present problems when the asphalt plant is in production.

He pointed out that limiting the hours that the asphalt plant operates would hold up the airport runway paving project.

Mr Asalele says a balance must be maintained.
