Air New Zealand's maintenance division has won a new five year contract worth around 36 million US, with Hawaiian Airlines.

The airline says its technical operations division, will carry out heavy maintenance on Hawaiians 767 fleet.

The division's general manager, Chris Nassenstein, says winning the contract means the division has fulfilled its promise to staff to become internationally competitive.

New Zealand's Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union's national secretary, Andrew Little, says it wasn't too long ago that these jobs were under real threat.
