CNMI to be given access to federal nutrition programme

Eligible mothers and young children in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will soon be able to receive monthly federal assistance for specific nutritional needs.

In early August, the Deptartment of Public Health is launching its "Women, Infants and Children" programme for over 4,500 participants.

It's the first time the CNMI will be a part of the 100 percent federally funded programme, in which all 50 U.S. states and Guam participate.

The programme helps to reduce nutrition-related health problems, promotes breastfeeding, and preventative measures against anemia as well as assist low-income families with medical costs.

The Pacific Daily reports the millions of dollars earmarked for the programme will help CNMI's ailing economy.
