Fiji second free-to-air televison licence awarded to local company

Fiji's ministry of communications has issued the country's second free-to-air television licence to a locally registered company, Channel 2 Fiji Limited.

The directors of Channel 2 are a Fiji national, Mike Brook, and an Australian citizen, Kenneth Stratton.

The company lodged its television licence application several years ago and had been publicly asking why it wasn't getting a response from the deposed government.

Until now Fiji Television Limited, which is majority owned by indigenous Fijian provinces, has had a monopoly licence.

The interim minister for communications Taito Waradi, says five other companies also applied for TV licences, but missed out because they didn't meet the criteria laid down by the government.
