Vanuatu's Minister of Trade says Pacific countries should focus on improving tourism

10:04 am on 7 August 2007

Vanuatu's Minister of Trade says Pacific countries should focus their efforts on improving tourism infrastructure to boost their economies.

James Bule is attending the Pacific Islands Business Forum in Fiji which has attracted about 200 private sector and government delegates from 14 Forum Islands countries.

He says the forum is a good idea to share ideas, identify opportunities and try to overcome barriers to doing business.

And, he says people can also discuss the implications of various trade agreements, like PICTA and PACER, together.

"We can look at other things like tourism for example. Like doing trading their goods and trading their services. So we the government can sit with the private sector so that we can provide an avenue to say look, these are the trade agreements which we have negotiated on their behalf."

Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation has organised the forum with the support of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme.

The two day business forum ends today.
