France says it spent just over 7,000 US dollars per French Polynesian inhabitant last year.

Figures released by the French high commission in Papeete show that transfers totalled 1.7 billion US dollars during 2006 which was an increase of seven percent over the previous year.

About 40 percent of the funds were spent on education and about 20 percent on justice and security.

The high commission says the fund transfer help sustain the French Polynesian economy.
