Fiji's new-look Great Council of Chiefs will not have members with criminal records.

The interim minister for Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says this will be the most important criteria for their selection following the review of the Great Council which is now under way.

He has also indicated that the new Council could have fewer than the 55 members it had when they were suspended in April.

He says while the Great Council as an institution has been restored, its former members remain sacked and some of them will not make it back into the new body.

There will be consultations with Fiji's chiefly households on who the right candidates should be.

Ratu Epeli says the current review will result in a more vibrant, responsive and apolitical Great Council of Chiefs.
