Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is returning to Suva at the end of the month for the first time since he fled the city following the coup.

Mr Qarase has been living in exile on his home island of Vanuabalavu but says he will return to the capital to prepare for his court case challenging the military overthrow of his government.

The case is set down for October the 2nd but the ousted P.M. says he needs time with his lawyers.

Mr Qarase is not anticipating any problems from the military and is hopeful he won't be prevented from flying to Suva as has occurred previously.

"I don't really expect any problem when I go back but you really can't tell because my house in Suva has been under constant surveillance by the military. I really don't want to be living under that sort of environment but I suppose I will just have to face up to it if I have to attend the court case, and I want to attend the court case."
