American Samoa to reapportion tax monies to pay schoolteachers

9:55 am on 10 August 2007

A hike in salaries for public school teachers in American Samoa is closer to becoming a reality after senators passed yesterday in second reading the proposal that now includes several funding sources for the salary increase.

The proposal has been sitting in the Senate Education Committee since its introduction in March because no funding source was identified in the legislation.

Yesterday, three amendments were proposed and passed by the senators identifying sources of funding that will come out of existing tax laws.

The amendments shift about two million US dollars from taxes levied on gasoline, excise and propane gas to fund the teacher's salaries.
