Fiji Mineworkers Union welcomes re-opening of Vatukoula

10:20 am on 14 August 2007

The general-secretary of the Fiji Mineworkers Union, Satish Chandra, is hoping to hold a meeting with the Australian company, Westech, which is re-opening the Vatukoula gold mine.

Mr Chandra says there's no confirmation yet on how recruitment will take place but he is hopeful that many of the skilled workers in the district will be re-employed.

1700 workers were laid off when the mine was closed down in December.

Mr Chandra says people have found it hard to survive.

"These two districts doesn't have any other industry apart from the gold mine. And, people are facing a lot of difficulties in last eight to nine months. As soon as this operation is in a position to re-open and continue, then I believe that the people of these two districts will be engaged in this industry."
