PNG baby dies after birth in drifting boat

Authorities in Papua New Guinea say a woman gave birth while missing at sea in an open boat with four members of her family.

They say the baby died soon after being born but the three adults and two children on board survived nine days drifting until being rescued last Wednesday.

Their boat's motor broke down on a mercy dash to take the pregnant woman from her home on Budibudi Island in Milne Bay Province to a health clinic on another island.

The baby was buried in the village and provincial disaster officials arranged for the family to be flown home after doctors examined them.
