Australia to spend US$12m on APEC region disaster prevention

The Australian Government has announced 12 million US dollars in funding to help protect the Asia Pacific region from natural disasters.

The Pacnews agency says the money will go towards programmes run by the United Nations , World Bank and the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.

It coincides with the APEC summit on disaster preparedness taking place in Cairns.

Representatives from 14 countries of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation are attending.
