Fifteen companies are reported to have lodged expressions of interest to operate another mobile phone service in Fiji in competition with the longtime monopoly provider, Vodaphone Fiji.

Fiji TV reports that the West Indies based company, Digicel's application was handed in yesterday by the Fiji rugby sevens player, Waisele Serevi.

Digicel has sponsored the Fiji rugby sevens team with more than 2-point-4 million US dollars since April last year when it received approval in principle from the ousted Qarase government.

The company has since been setting up infrastructure in Fiji although it has yet to receive a licence to operate.

Digicel's chief legal officer David Dillon, says theirs is a strong bid which will see an investment of 125-million US dollars.
