Deposed Fiji PM cancels visit to Suva after receiving death threat

Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, claims he has cancelled his planned return to Suva on Friday after receiving a death threat.

Mr Qarase has told Fiji TV he received the death threat at 7.50am yesterday in a telephone call from a male who claimed he was from the military.

Mr Qarase claims the caller said the military was happy he was returning to Suva and they would kill him on his arrival.

He says the caller then swore at him and ended the call.

Mr Qarase says he reported the threat to his lawyer in Suva, Tevita Fa.

Mr Qarase had earlier claimed that he could not travel to Suva because the military had instructed Air Fiji not to allow him to board any of its planes.

The military spokesman, Lt Col Mosese Tikoitoga, has rejected both claims saying Mr Qarase is trying to drum up local and international support and sympathy.

Lt Col Tikoitoga says the military does not go into killing individuals and will investigate the matter if credible evidence is given.
