Global energy group considering renewable energy projects for Pacific

The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership or REEEP says donor countries need to become more involved in efforts to develop renewable energy in the Pacific.

REEEP is an active, global public-private partnership that structures policy and regulatory initiatives for clean energy, and facilitates financing for energy projects around the globe.

Its officials are this week meeting in New Zealand, determining what strategies to adopt to promote renewable energy in the Pacific over the next year.

REEEP's Finance Advisor Mike Allen says they are encouraged by the political will shown by Pacific energy ministers to work together for renewable and sustainable energy.

But he says donor countries in the region now need to also be co-ordinated into these efforts.

"REEEP has the opportunity as an international partnership with relatively high-level political connections to try and influence that and that is one of the things that we're going to be looking at - as to whether we can act in some way to try and co-ordinate the donors, because there's no immediate forum for donors to be co-ordinated. There are individual governments who are dealing with a variety of donors and in some way we see that this partnershi can try and co-ordinate that."
