The lawyer for Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has lodged a formal complaint with police over a death threat made in a phone call.

Mr Qarase says somebody claiming to be from the military rang him to say that if he did fly to Suva from his home island of Vanuabalavu on Friday as planned, he would be killed on arrival.

His lawyer, Tevita Fa, says he wants the police to investigate the threat.

"I've asked the commissioner of police that this is a serious matter. He should look into it, he should assign an officer, a senior officer to this and I hope he does look into the matter."

The military has denied that it has issued any threats against Mr Qarase or instructed Air Fiji not to allow him to board the plane.
