The American Samoa legislature leadership plans to establish a non-profit foundation to provide financial assistance to local students attending off-island summer programmes to further their education.

Senate President Lolo M. Moliga said he and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale agreed to the foundation as a way to help local students and their families who are always looking for financial contribution to help defray off-island travel expenses.

Every year, lawmakers especially the Fono leadership are bombarded with letters from students and/or organizations, seeking financial help.

Lolo said the foundation will be established using left over funds the Fono received during its fundraising efforts to host the June conference of the Association Pacific Islands Legislatures .

He said US$2,600 will be used to officially open and establish the foundation.
