Fiji police say they are investigating a prominent high chief, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, for allegedly assaulting a soldier in a Suva nightclub on Saturday night.

The director of the police criminal investigation department, Superintendent Waisea Vakamocea, has told Radio Legend that a report has been lodged in which a soldier claims that he was assaulted by Ratu Epenisa.

Mr Vakamocea says the case will be treated like any normal investigation.

The assistant police spokesperson, Corporal Suliana Tevita, has confirmed that Ratu Epenisa was later taken to the military barracks but was released.

The military won't comment on Ratu Epenisa being taken to the army camp except to say that with the Emergency Regulations back in place, the military is only supporting police operations.

Ratu Epenisa has confirmed being locked up in a cell at the army camp on Saturday night.
