The Taiwan Government has given Solomon Islands nearly a million US dollars to rehabilitate its cattle industry.

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says the funding will provide more opportunities for people in rural areas and boost the national economy.

Selected farmers in Malaita and Guadalcanal provinces are expected to receive their first herds from the Government in December this year.

The cattle will be distributed under the Solomon Islands Cattle Rehabilitation Programme, which aims to revive the once thriving cattle industry in the country.

The Permanent Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Dr Israel Wore says around 700 in calf cows will be shipped into the country from Australia in November.
