Fiji tourism to get boost through film festival

The Fiji Visitor's Bureau says a new film festival will highlight other parts of the country's tourism sector.

The week-long festival will be held in February, the traditional off-season in the country, and showcase Bollywood movies as well as Pacific fiction and documentaries.

It is to be co-organised by the Fiji Audio Visual commission, the Fiji Visitor's Bureau, the Trade and Investment Bureau and unnamed investors from Dubai.

The visitor bureau's marketing director, Cherill Watson, hopes the festival will not only boost tourist numbers.

"It is going to be small to start with. We are very lucky if we get a few hundred [guests]. But then we will grow it. It will become an established part of the circuit and it will also [highlight] a different aspect of Fiji tourism, not just fly and flop. This will show that something is happening here and it will give us a chance to highlight other parts of Fiji tourism."

Cherill Watson says tourism authorities hope to offer cheap package deals for the time of the festival.
