Solomons minister charged over assault incident

3:58 pm on 14 September 2007

A Solomon Islands cabinet minister has been charged by police with unlawful wounding and possession of a weapon.

Police had arrested Commerce Minister Peter Shanel soon after a student was allegedly attacked with a knife outside the National Referral Hospital in Honiara three weeks ago.

But charges were not laid until yesterday.

A local newspaper, the Solomon Star, has reported that Mr Shanel had admitted the attack saying he was protecting his wife who had earlier been kicked by the victim during an argument.
