Joint police operations in Fiji in bid to contain serious crime

3:38 pm on 18 September 2007

Fiji police are hoping that a joint police force operation will help bring down the number of violent robberies and home invasion cases.

The operation, called Sasamaki, brings together the traffic department, union operations, CID and the dog police unit.

The interim prime minister sought an urgent briefing from the police commissioner last week on the increasing levels of violent crime.

The director of the police uniform, Senior superintendent Manoa Bale, says police have been setting up road blocks at random places.

He says police have been focussing on areas which criminals are likely to target.

"Like ah, the bus service station, the shopping complex, city centres, and other heavily populated areas."

He says they are keen to ensure that the public feel safe.
