A senior government official in American Samoa has resigned after pleading guilty to witness tampering in a federal sex trafficking investigation.

Uiagalelei Iona, who has been the acting Director of the Office of Property Management, submitted his resignation to the Governor Togiola Tulafono.

Uiagalelei had met two Chinese women and instructed them to lie when they testified before a federal grand jury in Honolulu.

Togiola said he has accepted the resignation and thanked Uiagalelei for his service.
