Support in American Samoa for tighten limits on youth access to alcohol

American Samoa's Department of Youth and Women's affairs says it supports the protection of youth to tighten legislation on the minimum drinking age and make it 21.

The bill makes it a crime for anyone under 21 to possess or consume alcohol.

The measure, submitted by District Court Judge John Ward says that there is a major law enforcement problem with current legislation regulating drinking among youth.

Director Leuga Turner says that young people aren't mature enough to drink responsibly until they are 21, despite some senators lobbying for the minimum drinking age to be lower, at 18.

"Its just a lot of young children driving on the road that's causing traffic on the road problems. Also they need to be mature to the level of having good judgement because when there's the influence of drug and alcohol and the young ones having or need a quick response driving on the road, [they're] disturbing the public peace."
