Samoan chamber of commerce wary of road side switch

5:13 pm on 21 September 2007

The Samoan chamber of commerce is concerned about a proposed switch from driving on the right to the left hand side of the road.

The Transport Control Board has proposed the country swap and a committee is looking into the matter.

The chamber of commerce president, Klaus Stunzner, says the government needs to talk to business people and the general public before making the change.

Mr Stunzner fears it would be too costly for the country.

"What's of primary concern to us is the safety issue, how they will monitor or bring in the switch. Businesses, where you have drive-ins, like Mc Donald's, we need to look at how they will restructure their premises. What do we do with all the left-hand drive vehicles if we can't sell them off to anywhere else, what do we do with them when they are no longer roadworthy?"

Klaus Stunzner says there needs to be clarity over a number of things, including educating the public, exchanging road signs and remarking the roads.

If approved, the switch will happen mid next year.
