An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has been registered between New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
The quake's epicentre was 25 kilometres below the sea.
The quake has been followed by a series of aftershocks of similar magnitude.
There are no reports of any damage.
The closest inhabited islands are Tanna in Vanuatu and Mare in New Caledonia's Loyalty group.
