Fiji and Solomons call for help to address root causes of problems in Pacific

Fiji and Solomon Islands have called on the international community to address the underlying causes of the problems in the Pacific Islands countries.

The two say there has to be a move beyond governance issues to address the root causes of instability in the Pacific region.

The call was made in New York where Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, met the Solomons foreign minister, Patteson Oti.

The Solomons government says Mr Oti briefed the Fiji delegation about the action taken by the government of Solomon Islands in dealing with its partnership with RAMSI.

This month's summit of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, which also includes Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, has been delayed until next year because of other commitments by the Solomons prime minister.
