American Samoa education boss for teachers pay rise but against strike

The director of education in American Samoa, Claire Poumeli, says she does not support a teacher's strike next week if the Fono fails to approve a bill to increase teachers' salaries.

The lobby group Common Cause American Samoa has restated its plan for teachers to strike next Tuesday if the Fono does not increase their salaries.

A bill to increase teachers' salaries has been put on hold.

Claire Poumeli is for teachers' pay rises, but says going on strike is not the way forward.

"I don't support this strike I think there are better ways us approaching this issue and teachers walking out of this job is not the answer to this issue. If anything I think teachers need to rally together and prove that they certainly deserve more support from the government for the work they are doing."

Claire Poumeli says to her knowledge not many teachers support a strike action.
