An outbreak of dengue fever in Yap, Palau has prompted the Department of

Public Health and Human Services in Guam to launch a campaign to prevent the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Asia Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases of the John Burns School of Medicine in Hawaii confirmed the presence of the virus from six of seven samples from Yap.

Of the six confirmed cases, two have been of the more serious hemorrhagic form of the disease and one of these cases was fatal.

The Guam Department of Public Health said one case of dengue contracted in the Philippines has been reported on Guam this year.
