Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority grants one month tax amnesty

11:06 am on 10 October 2007

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority is to declare a one-month tax amnesty for defaulters from the 15th of this month.

The amnesty will allow those who have not paid their taxes or those who have been evading their taxes to get their affairs in order without fear of prosecution.

The interim minister of finance, Mahendra Chaudhry, says the aim of the amnesty is to maximize revenue from tax arrears without the costs associated with audits and enforcement.

Mr Chaudhry says tax arrears at the end of August this year stood at 103-million US dollars, an increase of 33% over the figure for August last year.

The amnesty will be in relation to all penalties if the taxpayer settles his tax arrears in full during the period of the amnesty which ends on November the 16th.
