The Commission of Inquiry into the April 18th Riot in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, has issued a suppression order covering statements by a witness who made serious allegations against politicians, businessmen and government workers.
The suppression order follows an application by the lawyer for former Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, requesting the right to cross examine the witness.
The Commission of Inquiry says other lawyers may also wish to cross-examine the witness on behalf of their clients.
During the brief hearing yesterday lawyers argued that the Terms of Reference of the Inquiry cover a whole range of areas which they felt should be dealt with by a separate commission of inquiry.
The lawyers felt the current commission should confine its work to the events of April 18th and 19th.
