Kiribati is today voting in a nationwide poll for a new president.
In the running is the incumbent, Anote Tong, and three other candidates.
But the two main opposition nominees failed to secure parliamentary nomination in a secret vote.
The editor of Radio Kiribati, Roz Terubea, says their exclusion from the vote has sparked protests:
"Early this week on Monday, civilian supporters of the opposition party held a peaceful gathering at the capital town just expressing their dissatisfaction over why the candidates from the opposition did not get a place in this presidential election."
