6:42 pm on 17 October 2007

Seven Burmese asylum seekers held in an Australian-run camp in Nauru have begun a peaceful protest to highlight their plight.

The Burmese men have put banners up in the camp saying, we only want to live in freedom - and we cannot live in Burma or Malaysia.

It is now more than a year since the men were picked up by Australian security forces .

Susan Metcalfe, who is a Refugee Advocate, has just returned from Nauru where she talked to Burmese men

"It's a terrible situation of people who don't know what their futures are. They can't go back to their past, so they are stuck in this terrible limbo."
