The situation at Papua new Guinea's University of Technology Lae campus has after violent clashes between students.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that on Tuesday police moved on to the campus and fired teargas to disperse the fighting students.

The latest fighting is between two ethnic groups believed to be at odds over a student boycott of classes in opposition to an increase in school fees.

PNG's Higher Education Minister Michael Ogio recently visited the campus to receive a petition by students over the university council's decision to impose a five percent increase in fees.

Fighting has escalated from differences in opinion where the majority of students now want to return to classes but are being stopped by a minority who want the boycott prolonged until the Government responds to the petition.
