Samoa launches prayer week ahead of cyclone season

Samoa's head of state, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, has declared a week of prayer and fasting as the country enters its six-month cyclone season.

A church service organised by the National Council of Churches is to be held this evening at the government's prayer house on Mount Vaea facing the capital Apia to officially mark the occasion.

It has been fifteen years since the government initiated the annual week of prayers and fasting to ask for the protection of the nation.

The initiative was taken after two major cyclones in 1990 and 1991 devastated the country.
