A former Fiji opposition leader says doctors should ensure and state publicly whether the country's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, is fit enough to do his job.

A human rights commissioner, Shamima Ali, has raised concern saying the 86-year old president might not be able to fulfill his role due to ill health and old age.

Mick Beddoes says he hasn't met the president for a while, but he stresses it is up to the doctors to ensure he's well enough to do his work.

"It is important for the doctors who are responsible for taking care of his health, to ensure that they are watching it and that he is not subjected to any undue pressure that his current health condition is unable to have him perform. That is really what should happen. They should be answering these questions."

Last year, the president made no comment when the military commander staged the coup and declared himself to be the president.
