Call for infrastructure improvements if Tokelau becomes self-governing

6:26 pm on 23 October 2007

The local leader on the Tokelau atoll of Fakaofo, Faipule Kolouei O'Brien, wants to see substantial infrastructure improvements if the referendum currently underway backs the territory becoming self-governing in free association with New Zealand.

The same question was asked just over eighteen months ago and then the answer was no.

But Kolouei O'Brien believes the people will this time back the change and he is looking forward to improvements:

"The priority is the school, put some new on rooms on the school,. The other one is the air strip. I think we need some airstrip because it is so isolated. I think it is hardwork , a difficult thing to do but we'll try."
